4 December 2011
When the rain falls, you get the beautiful sounds of pitter-pattering on the roof and the puddles on the ground, the sound of the water running down the drain-pipes on the sides of the house. Then the temperature drops and there's snow...and it's silent.
It's strange to think that while rain and snow are essentially the same thing, one is silent while the other is loud. When a snow-storm hits, it's quiet. There's no lightning or thunder, no pitter-patter on the rooftop, nothing. Instead of sinking into the ground, it sits on top of it and accumulates. The snow becomes a blanket over the land that is pure and solid, untouched until you step through it.
After it's over, they're both silent, until you decide to walk through the snow. There's a crunching sound with every step instead of a sloshing one. It's interesting how two things that are so similar, can be so completely different.
